Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will impose “dollar for dollar” retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods starting September 8, after trade talks with Washington collapsed. The move comes after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian products, about 5% of Canada’s annual exports, over the weekend. According to Carney, Canada’s countermeasures will target sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Carney said Ottawa had offered to drop its remaining retaliatory tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos if Washington reduced its own tariffs, but negotiations broke down after U.S. demands escalated. The dispute marks a sharp deterioration in U.S.-Canada trade relations, with both sides now bracing for an extended tariff standoff affecting key North American industries.
