Canada's Liberals sweep three by-elections, boosting Carney

Canada's Liberal Party swept three special elections Monday, according to reported results, strengthening Prime Minister Mark Carney as he squares off with President Trump in an escalating trade war. The Liberals won Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, Beaches-East York in Toronto, and North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia. Carney framed the wins as a vote of confidence in his government's handling of the U.S. standoff, saying in a statement that "voters have placed their trust in our government's plan" at what he called a consequential moment for Canada. The results come as Ottawa navigates rising tensions with Washington over tariffs, giving Carney a stronger political hand heading into further negotiations with the Trump administration.
