The Metropolitan Museum of Art has scrapped a planned exhibition on fashion designer John Galliano that was set to coincide with the 2027 Met Gala, following mounting criticism over his history of antisemitic and racist remarks. The museum and Galliano announced the decision jointly on Monday, after the Met received numerous complaints, including from New York City Council spokesperson Julia Mann. Galliano was once among fashion's most celebrated figures before videos surfaced in 2010 and 2011 showing him making antisemitic and racist comments, which drew widespread outrage. He was later convicted in France on antisemitism-related charges. The cancellation marks the latest example of an institution being forced to reckon with a public figure's documented history of bigotry rather than sanitize it for a high-profile platform.
