North Korea has replaced Defense Minister No Kwang-chol with Kim Song-gi, formerly head of the Korean People's Army's General Political Bureau, state media reported. The personnel change was approved during a meeting of the Workers' Party Central Military Commission led by leader Kim Jong Un, according to the report. No Kwang-chol is being reassigned as first vice-director of the party's Munitions Industry Department rather than being purged outright, state media indicated. The reshuffle comes as Pyongyang continues to expand military ties with Russia and press ahead with its weapons programs. North Korea's opaque political system rarely explains the reasoning behind such leadership changes, leaving analysts to speculate on whether the move reflects policy disputes, performance issues, or simply routine rotation within Kim's inner military circle.
